A planet in a sign it does not own is a guest, and how well it is treated depends on its relationship with the owner. Vedic astrology defines that relationship precisely, in two layers that are then combined, and the result is the middle of the dignity ladder — the part between exaltation and debilitation where most planets in most charts actually sit.
Skipping this is why so many readings collapse into “exalted, debilitated, or nothing”.
The permanent friendships
Naisargika maitri is fixed. It never changes from chart to chart.

Two features are worth pointing out because they are usually presented as quirks and are actually structural.
The Moon has no enemies. It is the only planet in the scheme with none, which fits its role as the significator of the mind — receptive to everything.
The relationships are not symmetrical. Mercury counts the Sun a friend, but the Sun counts Mercury only neutral. Venus counts Saturn a friend while Saturn counts Venus a friend too — but Venus counts the Sun an enemy while the Sun counts Venus an enemy as well. Some pairs are mutual and some are not, and the table has to be read row by row rather than as a grid.
The underlying logic, where the texts give one, is that a planet is friendly to those that own or are exalted in the signs around its own moolatrikona. It is a derivation rather than an arbitrary list, though it does not resolve every entry cleanly.
The temporary friendships
Tatkalika maitri changes with every chart, and it is decided by nothing but relative position.
- Planets in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th and 12th from a planet are its temporary friends.
- Planets in the 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th from it are its temporary enemies.
Count from the sign the planet occupies. Note that this makes a planet in the same sign a temporary enemy, which surprises people — conjunction is proximity, not friendship, and the classical view is that two planets in one sign compete for the same space.
Because the rule is purely positional, it is not symmetrical either in the way you might expect: if A is in the 3rd from B, then B is in the 11th from A, and both positions are friendly, so that pair is mutually friendly. But if A is in the 5th from B, B is in the 9th from A — both enemy positions. The scheme happens to come out mutual, which is a neat property of the 6-and-6 split.
Combining the two
Panchadha maitri, the fivefold relationship, adds the permanent and temporary layers together.

The result is five grades rather than three, and it is the fivefold grade — not the permanent table alone — that classical strength calculations use.
Where this sits in the dignity ladder

This matters because “not exalted, not debilitated” covers an enormous range. A planet in its best friend’s sign is functioning well; the same planet in a bitter enemy’s sign is barely functioning. Both are invisible if you only check the exaltation table.
A worked example
Suppose Saturn occupies Gemini, and Mercury — which owns Gemini — sits in the sign three positions ahead of Saturn.
Permanent: Saturn counts Mercury a friend. Temporary: Mercury is in the 3rd from Saturn, which is a friendly position. Friend plus friend gives adhimitra. So Saturn is sitting in the sign of a best friend, and although it is neither exalted nor in its own sign, it is comfortable and its results come without struggle.
Change one thing — put Mercury in the 7th from Saturn instead. Now the temporary relationship is enmity. Friend plus enemy gives sama, neutral. Same permanent table, same sign for Saturn, materially different reading.
Common questions
Do Rahu and Ketu have friendships?
Not in the standard tables, which cover the seven visible planets. Some later authorities assign them relationships, most commonly making Rahu friendly to Venus and Saturn and Ketu friendly to Mars. These are extensions rather than classical, and practitioners differ on whether to use them.
Which layer matters more?
The classical calculations use the combined fivefold grade, so neither on its own. In quick practice the permanent table is checked first because it does not require the chart, and the temporary layer is then applied to refine it.
Does a planet in a friend’s sign beat a debilitated planet in a kendra?
Dignity and house placement are separate axes and the tradition does not offer a single scale that merges them. The classical answer is to compute Shadbala, which combines positional, directional, temporal and motional strength into one figure precisely so that comparisons like this can be made.
Does this apply to transits too?
Yes. A transiting planet moving through a friend’s sign is read as more effective than the same planet in an enemy’s sign, and this sits alongside the Gochara house tables rather than replacing them.
