What Aries is, in the Vedic system
Vedic astrology reads Aries as Mesha, the first sign of the sidereal zodiac. Its lord is Mars, its element is fire, and its quality is movable (chara). Where a Western chart places the sign against the seasons, the sidereal zodiac fixes it against the stars, which is why the calendar dates here (Mar 21 – Apr 19) will not match the ones on a Western horoscope column.
Three lunar mansions fall across it: Ashwini, Bharani, and the first quarter of Krittika. If you know your nakshatra, that is a more precise position than the sign itself, and it is named at the top of the panel above whenever the Moon is passing through one. In terms of dignity, the Sun, exalted at 10 degrees of Aries.
Mars owns both Aries and Scorpio, so the sign that gives Aries its Chandrashtama is also ruled by its own lord.

Scorpio is the eighth sign counted from Aries. When the Moon transits it, Aries is in Chandrashtama — traditionally the most difficult stretch of the 27-day lunar cycle for this sign. It arrives once a month and lasts a little over two days, because that is how long the Moon spends in one sign.
The tradition does not claim something bad happens. It claims judgement and mood are least reliable, which is a narrower and more useful thing to say. The advice that goes with it is correspondingly narrow: do not sign, do not launch, do not start a journey you could postpone, and do not raise the argument you have been storing up. Ordinary work is unaffected, and the panel above says plainly when the day has arrived.
The strongest day: the Moon in Aquarius
The mirror of Chandrashtama is the 11th house, the labha or gain position, and for Aries that is Aquarius. Classical Gochara treats the Moon in the 11th as the best of all twelve placements: the day to ask, apply, collect and close. It also comes round once a month, about eleven days before the difficult one.
The other reliably good positions from Aries are the 3rd, 6th, 7th and 10th. The 4th and 12th are the low ones — expense, poor sleep, travel that costs more than it returns.

Aries is ruled by Mars, whose traditional attributions are the number 9, the colour coral red, the direction south and the weekday Tuesday. Those are the standing values for the sign and they do not change.

Should you read Aries as your Sun sign or your Moon sign?
Vedic Gochara is read from the Moon sign — the Janma Rashi, the sign the Moon occupied at your birth — not from the Sun sign that Western columns use. If your Moon is in Aries, this is your page whatever your Sun sign is. If you only know your Sun sign, this still describes the day’s weather, just less precisely for you.
Note also that the sidereal Sun sign is usually one sign earlier than the tropical one. Someone born in the first three weeks of the Western Aries window is often a sidereal Pisces. If the reading here consistently feels like it belongs to the previous sign, that is very likely the reason.

Why does my Aries reading change during the day?
Because the Moon does. It covers about thirteen degrees a day, so it crosses a sign boundary every two and a bit days and can do so at any hour. Reload in the evening and the overall index may have moved. The planetary hour changes roughly hourly by design.
How often is Aries in Chandrashtama?
Once every 27 to 28 days, for a little over two days each time — whenever the Moon is passing through Scorpio. Over a year that is about thirteen occurrences.
Is this a prediction?
No. The planetary positions are astronomy and they are accurate to a few arcminutes.
