Vedic astrology works with nine grahas. Seven are visible bodies and two are the points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic. Graha means “the one that seizes”, not “planet”, which is why the Sun and Moon are counted among them without difficulty and why two mathematical points can be.
Each graha carries a fixed set of significations — its karakatva — and almost every statement a chart makes is one of these significations expressed through a house. Learning them is the second step after the houses.
The nine, and what each signifies
Surya, the Sun
The soul, vitality, the father, authority, government, bone, the right eye, and self-expression in the sense of standing rather than speech. Rules Leo, exalted in Aries. A natural malefic by the tradition’s classification, on the reasoning that its heat scorches whatever it sits close to — see combustion. Day: Sunday. Metal: gold. Gem: ruby.
Chandra, the Moon
The mind, emotion, the mother, the public, water, comfort, and everything cyclical. Rules Cancer, exalted in Taurus. Benefic when waxing and near full; treated as malefic when waning and close to the Sun, which is one of the few conditional classifications in the system. It is also the reference point for transits and for the dasha sequence. Day: Monday. Gem: pearl.
Mangala, Mars
Energy, courage, conflict, younger siblings, land and property, blood, surgery, machinery, and accident. Rules Aries and Scorpio, exalted in Capricorn. A natural malefic, and the planet behind Mangal Dosh. Day: Tuesday. Metal: copper. Gem: red coral.
Budha, Mercury
Intellect, speech, calculation, commerce, writing, nerves, and youth. Rules Gemini and Virgo, and is the only planet exalted in a sign it also owns. Its benefic or malefic character is conditional: benefic when alone or with benefics, malefic when joined to malefics. Day: Wednesday. Gem: emerald.
Guru, Jupiter
Wisdom, the teacher, children, wealth, law, expansion, the liver, and dharma. Rules Sagittarius and Pisces, exalted in Cancer. The greatest natural benefic, and its aspect on the 5th and 9th is the standard protective factor in a chart. Day: Thursday. Gem: yellow sapphire.
Shukra, Venus
The spouse, pleasure, art, vehicles, luxury, refinement, reproductive health, and everything to do with attraction. Rules Taurus and Libra, exalted in Pisces. A natural benefic, and the significator of marriage for a male chart. Day: Friday. Gem: diamond.
Shani, Saturn
Time, labour, delay, endurance, old age, servants, iron, sorrow, and what has to be earned slowly. Rules Capricorn and Aquarius, exalted in Libra. A natural malefic and the slowest of the visible planets, which is why its transit produces Sade Sati. Day: Saturday. Gem: blue sapphire.
Rahu, the north node
Amplification without limit: appetite, ambition, foreignness, novelty, obsession, and worldly result. No sign rulership and no agreed exaltation. Takes on the character of whatever it sits with. Gem: hessonite.
Ketu, the south node
Detachment, subtraction, concentration, and what is already finished. Facility in the house it occupies together with indifference to that house’s rewards. Gem: cat’s eye. The nodes are covered at length in the article on the shadow planets.
Natural benefic and natural malefic

The important qualification: this is the natural classification and it is only the starting point. What decides how a planet behaves in your chart is which houses it rules from your Lagna — its functional classification. A natural malefic ruling a trikona is a functional benefic and is read as one of the best planets in that chart.
Confusing the two is the most common error in beginner readings. “Saturn is bad” is a statement about nothing in particular.
The karaka principle
Each graha is the natural significator of certain relationships and subjects, and this operates alongside the houses rather than instead of them.

Classical practice reads both. To assess marriage you look at the 7th house, its lord, and Venus, and a conclusion is only firm when the three agree. Where they disagree, the reading is that the department is mixed — which is usually the honest answer anyway.
There is one classical caution here, known as the karaka bhava nashaya principle: a karaka sitting in its own house is held by some authorities to damage that house rather than strengthen it. Jupiter in the 5th and Venus in the 7th are the examples usually cited. Not all authorities accept it, and it is worth knowing as a disagreement rather than a rule.
The weekday cycle
The seven visible grahas rule the seven days, and the order is not arbitrary. Arrange the planets by orbital period from slowest to fastest — Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon — and assign them in that repeating order to the twenty-four hours of a day. The planet ruling the first hour after sunrise names the day. Run the cycle forward twenty-four hours and the next day’s ruler falls exactly where the weekday sequence puts it.
The same hourly cycle is what produces the hora, the planetary hour used in daily timing, and it is why the weekday lord appears in every panchang.
Common questions
Why no Uranus, Neptune or Pluto?
The classical system was built around what can be seen without instruments, and the nine grahas are complete as a scheme — they carry the dashas, the aspects, the dignities and the karakatvas. Some modern practitioners add the outer planets; the classical literature contains no place for them, and adding them means inventing rulerships, dashas and dignities that no source supplies.
Are the gemstone remedies classical?
Gem attributions appear in the classical remedial literature, yes. What is modern is the retail apparatus around them. The traditional remedial menu is broader and mostly cheaper — mantra, charity, fasting on the planet’s weekday, and service — and the texts do not treat gems as the primary route.
Which planet is most important?
Whichever rules your Lagna, and after that whichever is running its dasha. There is no universal answer, and a reading that gives one has skipped the chart.
Do the grahas cause anything?
The tradition’s own framing is that they indicate rather than cause — the standard image is of a clock face showing the time rather than making it. That distinction is worth keeping, because it is the difference between reading a chart and fearing one.
The rulerships and dignities given here are the standard classical values. The significations attached to each graha are the traditional attributions of the literature, not predictions about events.
