Sade Sati: How to Tell If You Are In It, and Which Phase

Snow-covered mountain peak beneath a starry night sky

Sade Sati is the seven and a half years Saturn spends crossing the three signs that sit closest to your Moon sign: the twelfth, the first, and the second, counted from the Janma Rashi. Saturn takes about two and a half years over each sign, and three signs make seven and a half years. That is the whole definition. Everything else written about it is interpretation laid on top.

It is counted from the Moon sign, not the Sun sign. If you have only ever been told your Western Sun sign, the answer you get from most online calculators will be wrong for you. Find your Moon sign first, then come back to the table below.

Who is in Sade Sati now

Saturn is in Pisces for the whole of 2026. It entered the sign in 2025 and does not leave during 2026 — it reaches about 19 degrees of Pisces in the middle of the year, turns retrograde on 28 July, walks back to roughly 13 degrees, and turns direct again on 12 December. It ends the year lower in the sign than it started the summer.

With Saturn in Pisces, three Moon signs are in Sade Sati:

Moon sign Phase What the phase is called
Aquarius Third and last Setting phase — Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon
Pisces Second, the peak Peak phase — Saturn on the Moon itself
Aries First Rising phase — Saturn in the 12th from the Moon

Two further Moon signs are in the shorter transit, Shani Dhaiya, sometimes called Kantaka Shani. That is Saturn in the fourth or the eighth from the Moon, and it lasts two and a half years rather than seven and a half. Saturn in Pisces is the fourth from Sagittarius and the eighth from Leo, so Sagittarius and Leo Moon signs are in Dhaiya through 2026.

The remaining seven Moon signs are in neither.

The three phases are not three doses of the same thing

The tradition treats each phase as governing a different department, which is why lumping the seven and a half years together as one long bad patch loses most of the information.

Rising phase — Saturn in the 12th from the Moon

The twelfth house is the house of expenditure, of what leaves. Classically this phase is read as the one where outgoings rise, sleep is disturbed, and there is often a move or a separation from a familiar place. It is the phase that arrives before anything looks different from the outside.

Peak phase — Saturn on the Moon

Saturn transiting the Moon itself is read as pressure on the mind rather than on circumstances: fatigue, low mood, the sense that effort is not converting. This is the two and a half years that give Sade Sati its reputation. It is also the phase where the classical advice is most specific — reduce commitments rather than add them, and finish rather than start.

Setting phase — Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon

The second house is family, speech and accumulated resources. The last phase is read as the one where the account is settled: what was spent in the first phase and endured in the second shows up in the family and in the finances. It is also the phase that ends, which is the part most people are waiting for.

What the tradition actually claims

It is worth being precise about this, because the gap between the classical claim and the popular one is large.

Saturn is the karaka — the natural significator — of time, of labour, of delay, of old age, and of everything that has to be earned slowly. A Saturn transit over the Moon is read as a period in which those significations are emphasised. The tradition says that things take longer and cost more effort. It does not say that a particular event will happen on a particular date, and the classical texts do not treat Sade Sati as a sentence to be served.

The other thing the tradition says, which almost never survives into the popular version, is that the result depends on Saturn’s condition in your own birth chart. Saturn well placed at birth — in its own signs, exalted, or ruling a favourable house from the Lagna — produces a Sade Sati that reads as consolidation rather than loss. Saturn afflicted at birth produces the version everyone has heard about. Two people with the same Moon sign do not get the same seven and a half years.

Working out your own dates

You need two things: your Moon sign, and the dates Saturn changes sign. Saturn takes roughly thirty months per sign, so the arithmetic is simple once you have the ingress dates.

  1. Find the sign twelve, one and two positions from your Moon sign. Counting is inclusive and always forward: from Aries, the twelfth is Pisces, the first is Aries, the second is Taurus.
  2. Sade Sati begins when Saturn enters the first of those three and ends when it leaves the last.
  3. Add roughly two and a half years per sign.

Saturn’s retrograde periods complicate the edges. When Saturn turns retrograde shortly after entering a sign it can step back into the previous one, which means a phase can appear to start, stop and start again. Saturn’s 2026 retrograde does not do this — it stays well inside Pisces the whole time — but it is worth knowing why published date tables sometimes disagree by a few months.

What to do with the information

The classical remedies for Saturn are all in the same register, and it is a consistent one: they ask for regularity rather than ritual intensity. Saturday observance, work done for people who are old or poor or ill, iron and sesame and dark cloth given rather than worn, and the Shani stotras recited on Saturdays. Whatever one makes of the mechanism, the behaviour these prescribe — routine, service, restraint — is the behaviour the transit is said to require.

The practical reading is narrower and more useful than the fearful one. During Sade Sati, take on fewer new commitments and finish more old ones. Do not read a slow period as a permanent one. And do not make major irreversible decisions during the peak phase purely because you want the discomfort to end, which is the failure mode the tradition warns about most consistently.

Where this sits among the other timing systems

Sade Sati is a transit — Gochara — and transits are the outer layer of Vedic timing. The layer underneath is the dasha system, which divides a life into planetary periods from the Moon’s nakshatra at birth. A difficult transit landing inside a supportive dasha reads very differently from the same transit inside a Saturn dasha. If you are trying to understand a period rather than a day, the dasha is the first thing to establish and the transit is the second.

Below Sade Sati in scale is Chandrashtama, the two days a month the Moon passes through the eighth sign from your Moon sign, and below that the daily Gochara that the daily horoscope computes. They are the same idea at four different speeds.

Common questions

Does Sade Sati come to everyone?

Yes. Saturn passes through all twelve signs, so every Moon sign gets its seven and a half years roughly every thirty years. Most people get two or three in a lifetime. The first usually falls in childhood or early adulthood and is often the one nobody remembers as difficult.

Can Sade Sati be cancelled?

No, and the classical texts do not offer a cancellation. What they offer is the observation that a strong natal Saturn changes the character of the period substantially. Claims that a specific ritual removes the transit are not classical.

Is Sade Sati worse than Dhaiya?

It is longer. Dhaiya is two and a half years to Sade Sati’s seven and a half, and the eighth-house version — Saturn in the eighth from the Moon, which is Leo’s position through 2026 — is traditionally read as the harder of the two Dhaiya placements. Length and intensity are not the same thing.

I get different Sade Sati dates from different sites. Why?

Almost always because one of them is counting from your Sun sign. The other common cause is a different ayanamsa — the offset between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs — which can move a sign boundary by a few days at the edges. Readings here use the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is the Indian government standard.

The planetary positions given above are astronomical and computed for 2026. The readings attached to them are the traditional meanings recorded in the classical Gochara literature, not predictions about events. Nothing here substitutes for medical, legal or financial advice.
