The Life Path number is the entry point to numerology. It is derived from your full date of birth, it never changes, and in most numerological systems it is treated as the number that describes the broad shape of a life rather than the details of a day. Here is how it is calculated, where people usually get the arithmetic wrong, and what each result traditionally represents.

How to calculate your Life Path number

Reduce the month, the day and the year each to a single digit, then add those three results and reduce once more.

Worked example — 12 April 1983:

• Month: 4 → 4
• Day: 12 → 1 + 2 = 3
• Year: 1983 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 3 = 21 → 2 + 1 = 3
• Total: 4 + 3 + 3 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1

The Life Path number is 1.

The mistake almost everyone makes

The common error is to string the whole date into one long number — 14111987 — and add every digit at once. That shortcut gives the right answer sometimes and the wrong answer often, because it collapses the master numbers before you can see them. Reduce the three components separately.

Master numbers

11, 22 and 33 are held back rather than reduced. If the month, day, year or the final total lands on one of these, it stays as is. A November birthday, for instance, gives a month value of 11, not 2 — and some practitioners keep it that way through the calculation. This is one of the places where numerological systems genuinely disagree, so a calculator that gives you a different answer than a book is often using a different convention, not making an error.

What each Life Path number traditionally represents

• 1 — the initiator. Independence, drive, a preference for leading rather than joining. The shadow side is stubbornness and difficulty asking for help.
• 2 — the mediator. Sensitivity to other people, diplomacy, partnership over solo work. The shadow is avoidance of conflict at the cost of one’s own position.
• 3 — the communicator. Expression, creativity, sociability. The shadow is scattering energy across too many things at once.
• 4 — the builder. Structure, discipline, patience with long projects. The shadow is rigidity and resistance to changing a plan that is not working.
• 5 — the seeker. Change, travel, appetite for the new. The shadow is restlessness and unfinished commitments.
• 6 — the carer. Responsibility for others, home, service. The shadow is over-involvement in other people’s problems.
• 7 — the analyst. Study, solitude, a need to understand things from first principles. The shadow is withdrawal and over-scepticism.
• 8 — the organiser. Ambition, material and structural competence, comfort with authority. The shadow is measuring worth in outcomes alone.
• 9 — the humanitarian. Breadth of sympathy, idealism, endings and completion. The shadow is losing the individual in the cause.
• 11 — the intuitive. Read as a heightened 2: sensitivity turned toward insight, with the nervous energy that comes with it.
• 22 — the master builder. Read as a heightened 4: large-scale practical vision, and the pressure of it.
• 33 — the teacher. Read as a heightened 6: care extended outward, rare in practice and treated cautiously by most practitioners.

Compatibility, and what it is actually claiming

Numerological compatibility compares two Life Path numbers and describes how their tendencies interact — a 4 and a 5, for example, are read as a structure-versus-freedom pairing that works when both name the tension early. It is worth being clear about what this is: a framework for talking about temperament differences, not a prediction. Couples who find it useful usually use it as a conversation starter, which is a reasonable thing for it to be.
