Vedic astrology reads almost everything from your Moon sign — the Janma Rashi, the sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. It is not your Sun sign, and for most people it is a different sign entirely. Enter your birth details and this works it out from the Moon’s actual position.

Why the Moon sign and not the Sun sign
Western horoscope columns use the Sun sign, because the Sun’s position depends only on the date — convenient for print. Vedic astrology took a different route. It reads daily transits, dashas and compatibility from the Moon, on the reasoning that the Moon governs manas, the reacting and perceiving mind, and that is what daily life actually runs on.
The practical consequence: the Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days, so it needs a birth date and time, not just a date. That is the only reason this asks for more than your birthday.
Two things that make this differ from a Western chart
It is sidereal. Vedic astrology measures against the fixed stars; Western astrology measures from the spring equinox, which drifts. The two have separated by roughly 24 degrees — nearly a whole sign. So your sidereal Sun sign is usually one sign earlier than the Western one you already know. The calculator shows both so you can see the shift.
It uses the Lahiri ayanamsa to make that correction, which is the standard adopted by the Indian government calendar and by most practitioners. Other ayanamsas exist and differ by a fraction of a degree; only a birth right on a sign boundary would land differently.
What the nakshatra tells you
The calculator also returns your birth nakshatra and its pada (quarter). The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each, and each of those into four padas. It is a finer coordinate than the sign: your rashi is one of twelve, your nakshatra-pada is one of a hundred and eight.
It matters because the nakshatra, not the sign, drives several core Vedic systems — the Vimshottari dasha timeline runs from the nakshatra lord shown beside your result, traditional naming picks a syllable from the pada, and marriage matching (Guna Milan) is scored almost entirely from the two nakshatras. Your two dates each month
Once you know your Moon sign, two recurring dates follow automatically and neither needs a chart:
- Chandrashtama — the two-and-a-bit days the Moon spends in the eighth sign from yours, traditionally the month’s least reliable stretch for judgement. Full explanation and the table for all twelve signs.
- The 11th-house days — the Moon in the eleventh sign from yours, which classical Gochara rates the strongest of all twelve positions. It falls about eleven days before the difficult one.
The calculator names both signs for you. The daily horoscope then tells you where the Moon is right now, so you can see which of the twelve positions you are currently in.
If you do not know your birth time
Leave the time at 12:00. The Moon covers about half a degree an hour, so over a whole day it moves roughly thirteen degrees — a little under half a sign. Most of the time the sign still comes out right. The exception is a birth that falls near a sign boundary, and the calculator flags that case rather than pretending to a precision it does not have.
The nakshatra is more sensitive: it is only 13°20′ wide, so the Moon crosses one about every day. Without a birth time, treat the nakshatra as indicative and the pada as unreliable.
Common questions
Why is my Moon sign different from every Western site?
Because those sites are almost always tropical. A tropical Moon in early Leo is a sidereal Moon in Cancer. Neither is wrong; they are two different coordinate systems, and Vedic technique is built on the sidereal one.
Do I need my birth place?
Only for the time zone, which you select yourself. The Moon’s sign is computed geocentrically, so the observer’s location on Earth shifts the result by at most about one degree of parallax — immaterial unless you are already sitting on a boundary. A full birth chart does need the place, because the ascendant and houses depend on it.
What about daylight saving?
Choose the offset that was actually in force where and when you were born, not today’s offset. Many countries have changed their rules, and some observed summer time in years they no longer do. If your result sits close to a boundary, an hour matters and this is the first thing to check.
Is my Moon sign the same as my rashi?
Yes. Janma Rashi, birth rashi, Moon sign and Chandra rashi all name the same thing.
